Sand Washing Tailwater / Environmental Treatment

Fine Sand Recovery & Filter Press Environmental Line

Wet-process tailwater treatment line for sand washing plants, combining fine sand recovery, dewatering and filter-press slurry treatment.

Process scope Solution framework only. Water reuse rate, filter cake moisture and zero-discharge planning target must be confirmed by slurry test, site layout and local environmental requirements.

Equipment matching is checked by feed material, mud and moisture, target capacity, product size, site layout and environmental requirements.

Overview

Where this process fits

This solution is for wet sand washing projects that need to reduce fine sand loss, treat muddy tailwater and plan water recycling.

The line does not replace the front-end crushing or washing process. It works as an environmental and recovery section after wheel sand washer, spiral sand washer or other wet washing equipment.

Process

Feed stone or sand material into the crushing and washing line according to the front-end process.

GZT grizzly feeder or ZSW vibrating feeder

02. Primary crushing

Reduce large rock or aggregate feed before secondary crushing and screening.

WLC jaw crusher

03. Secondary crushing

Match the crushing section according to material hardness and finished aggregate requirement.

PCZ heavy hammer crusher, single-cylinder cone crusher or multi-cylinder cone crusher

04. Screening and grading

Separate aggregate sizes and prepare suitable material for washing.

Inclined screen, horizontal screen or WLGSX trommel screen

05. Sand washing

WS tailings recovery machine with hydrocyclone, slurry pump and dewatering screen

07. Dewatering

Dewater washed sand and recovered fine sand before conveyor stockpiling.

WLTS high frequency dewatering screen

08. Filter press slurry treatment

Treat remaining muddy water, discharge filter cake and return clarified water for washing reuse where site water quality allows.

HHT automatic plate-and-frame filter press with slurry pump and buffer pond

Feed Materials

Suitable feed materials

  • Front-end washing feed: river pebble, granite, limestone, weathered mountain sand, quartz sand, manufactured crushed stone and low-hardness bluestone.
  • Washed recycled aggregate from construction waste can be discussed when the washing process is confirmed.
  • Treatment medium: sand washing overflow slurry containing fine sand, soil, clay and stone powder.
  • Settling pond sludge and tail mud from existing sand washing plants.
Mud Content

Mud-content assessment

  • Low mud: Mud content below 10%; settling pond sludge is limited. A WS fine sand recovery machine can be discussed first, while the filter press may work intermittently or remain optional.
  • Medium mud: Mud content around 10%-25%; WS fine sand recovery plus HHT filter press is recommended for regular wastewater treatment.
  • High mud: Mud content above 25%; the complete system should be discussed, with larger cyclone configuration, slurry pump capacity and filter area.
Output Targets

Target products and operating goals

  • Recover fine sand from washing overflow and produce usable 0-5 mm recovered sand where the grading meets the buyer's requirement.
  • Separate mud and water so clarified water can return to the washing system, reducing fresh-water demand under suitable site conditions.
  • Press slurry into filter cake for hauling, backfill or other permitted use. Reference filter cake moisture depends on mud properties and filter-press operation.
  • Reduce wastewater discharge pressure and settling pond cleaning work, supporting stricter environmental project planning.
Washing

When washing is required

  • This complete line is only used with wet sand washing projects. Dry crushing and screening lines do not create washing slurry and normally do not need WS + HHT equipment.
  • If the project only produces coarse aggregate and does not recover 0-5 mm sand, a simpler pond-based water treatment plan may be discussed first.
Wet Process

Optional wet-processing section

  • Dosing tank with PAC / PAM may be discussed when the slurry requires chemical conditioning before filter pressing.
  • Larger or dual hydrocyclone configuration can be discussed for high-mud and high-capacity washing plants.
  • PLC integrated control can be discussed when the buyer needs coordinated pump, recovery and filter-press operation.
  • Pipe insulation and enclosed workshop should be discussed for freezing winter regions.
Finished Sizes

Finished product size references

Recovered fine sand
  • 0-5 mm washed / recovered sand
  • Used for commercial concrete, permeable brick or other downstream uses only after buyer testing
Graded aggregate
  • 5-10 mm
  • 10-20 mm
  • 20-31.5 mm
Filter cake and water
  • Filter cake moisture is a reference value and depends on mud properties, conditioning and filter cycle.
  • Clarified water reuse is a project target, not an unconditional guarantee.
Outputs

Main product outputs

  • Recovered fine sand: 0-5 mm, used as manufactured sand where grading and cleanliness meet the buyer's requirement.
  • Graded aggregate: 5-10 mm, 10-20 mm and 20-31.5 mm when the front-end line includes aggregate screening.
  • Filter cake: treated mud cake for hauling, backfill or other permitted use according to local rules.
  • Clarified water: returned to the washing system where water quality and site layout allow.
Selection Limits

Key selection limits

  • Suitable for wet sand washing lines where fine sand loss is significant or settling ponds clog frequently.
  • Suitable when local environmental requirements restrict wastewater discharge and a zero-discharge planning target must be discussed.
  • Suitable when mud content is high and pond cleaning cost is becoming a major operation problem.
  • Suitable when the site has limited space and cannot build large multi-stage settling ponds.
  • Suitable when the buyer wants to recover lost fine sand and improve finished sand yield.
  • Not needed for dry crushing and screening lines with no washing water or slurry.
  • If the project is below 30 t/h and temporary, a small WS recovery unit plus periodic pond cleaning may be discussed before a full filter-press system.
  • If slurry contains plastic, wood chips, grass or other floating trash, a front-end grating or filter screen should be added to protect cyclone and filter plates.
  • For freezing winter regions, pipe insulation and enclosed workshop planning should be included.

FAQ

Frequently asked project questions

When should a sand washing plant add fine sand recovery and filter press treatment?

Add this line when washed overflow carries saleable fine sand, settling ponds fill quickly, or wastewater discharge is restricted. The core equipment is usually the WS fine sand recovery machine, WLTS dewatering screen and HHT filter press.

Can this line replace the sand washer?

No. It works after a sand washer or other wet washing equipment. The washer cleans the sand; the recovery and filter-press section handles overflow slurry, recovered fine sand, mud cake and recycled water.

What must be checked before sizing the filter press?

The slurry volume, mud content, fine-sand content, existing pond size, filter cycle, target water reuse and local discharge rule must be checked before selecting the HHT filter press.
